Indigenous Focus
The Indigenous Focus School is located at Xpey' Elementary School. Indigenous and non-Indigenous students from Vancouver are welcome to enrol in this unique and innovative school.
The Indigenous Focus School strives for educational excellence and an environment where students are confident, critical thinkers and engaged learners. The curriculum is respectful of local First Nations, the values, experiences and histories of all Indigenous peoples, and the shared worldview between Indigenous people and environmentalists.
More than a school, Xpey̓ is a gathering place that celebrates Indigenous ways of knowing, learning and being. The name was gifted by Musqueam to the school in 2018. In the Musqueam dialect of hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (halk-uh-MAY-lum), Xpey̓ means cedar, and it has cultural, educational, historical and spiritual resonance for this school's community. The name reflects deep respect for the cedar tree that plays an integral role in the spiritual beliefs and ceremonial life of local Indigenous peoples.
