Pre-Math 8
In order to assist students in the transition from Grade 7 to Grade 8 Mathematics, Ms. Ali and a student have developed a Moodle course (pre-Math 8) in 2012 that has assessments at the beginning and end of the course, instructional links and some, if any, practice links. The topics are from the Math 7 curriculum plus a few additional topics to help bridge the Math 7-Math 8 gap.
Another Moodle course (Basic Division) was created in the school year 2012-2013 to help students to become more proficient with the different formats of division. It is a simple course with several timed quizzes. The quizzes may lag due to image loading issues, and we apologize for that, but that's the best VSB has to offer.
The Moodle courses can be used in several ways, a few being:
- If a student is away from class, they can watch the video at home and keep up with the material.
- If a student is having difficulty with a concept they can play the videos more than once to help grasp it.
- It can be used as review for a student, if necessary
- Parents can use it to help their children with their homework.
We find that students struggle with Math in high school because they are missing fundamental skills/concepts. Most of the questions in the course are set up so that a concept is tested, but the answers may vary. Students who achieve about 80% on the assessment at the end of the course without a calculator, are generally successful in high school mathematics.
